Hubba Bubba, look who's getting the illuminati all agog
Keep the camera handy at the weekend. You may just get a happy snap of
Bill Clinton, whose handlers want him out sightseeing to fill in the
gaps between his $200,000 appearances.
But whether climbing the Harbour Bridge, cruising the harbour or
bushwalking, the Clinton entourage will be harder to spot than during
his Sydney visit five years ago, when he was still the planet's most
powerful man.
Then, befitting a United States president, he had in tow a small army of
advisers and Secret Service personnel.
Tonight at Randwick racecourse, 770 guests will be assured of a Clinton
sighting, thanks to the $1,100 each has paid to attend a fundraising
dinner for The Children's Hospital at Westmead.
Some paid more than double to attend pre-dinner cocktails with Mr
Clinton, whose 45-minute speech is expected to canvass his eight years
in the White House, world leaders he met and global issues that retain
his interest.
The function is expected to raise more than $1 million.
The event's organiser, Mr Max Markson, yesterday described the guest
list at the sell-out dinner as the "who's who of town".
It includes actors (The Matrix's Laurence Fishburne and Carrie-Anne
Moss, and Jurassic Park III's Sam Neill), television performers (Don
Burke, Kerri-Anne Kennerley and Kamahl) and sportspeople (one being the
rugby league great John Raper).
Businessmen will include Daniel Petrie, Harry Triguboff, David Lowy,
John Singleton and Fred Hilmer. Margaret Whitlam will be the most
prominent guest from Australian politics.
The ALP had its own ambitions for the Clinton visit, hoping a room full
of guests would each pay about $50,000 to dine with the ex-president.
But the plan fell over after questions about whether the party
fundraiser was linked to the generosity of those who profited handsomely
from the Carr Government's poker machine policy.
An exclusive fund-raising dinner at Point Piper tomorrow also collapsed
when the Jewish group B'nai B'rith could not muster the necessary 25
couples each willing to pay $25,000.
Instead, Mr Clinton will attend a private function in Sydney, then fly
to Melbourne on Monday for another corporate get-together, this time to
address what promoters call "30 of Australia's most influential business
leaders".
Mr Markson said Mr Clinton packed his itinerary because he could. He
was in demand because "he's the best speaker in the world ... and he's
got legal bills of $US11 million [$21.2 million]."
Discharging the legal legacy at the Australian pay rate would need a
speaking engagement every day for eight months (tax included).
