Denorex shampoo maker settles suit over carcinogen

The Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO (September 7, 2001 7:43 p.m. EDT) - Whitehall-Robins
has settled a civil suit against it claiming that its Denorex dandruff shampoo
contains unsafe amounts of coal tar, a carcinogen.

The American Home Products subsidiary said Friday it will pay $427,500
and will lower the amount of coal tar in its products by 72 percent. Coal tar is
a treatment for dandruff.

"We are going to formulate a new product," Whitehall-Robins spokesman
Fran Sullivan said. "It will be out nationwide by mid-December."

The suit was brought by San Francisco-based Occupational Knowledge
International, a nonprofit organization that has similar suits pending against
20 other manufacturers of coal-tar shampoos. The suits are based on a state
proposition.

"Proposition 65, which was passed by voter initiative in the late '80s, meant
that anyone exposing others to a carcinogen must notify them," said Perry
Gottesfeld, executive director of Occupational Knowledge International.

The other suits include manufacturers such as Johnson & Johnson subsidiary
Neutrogena, which makes T/gel, and Reedco, which manufactures Tegrin.
Those cases are scheduled for trial in January.

Gottesfeld said he filed the suits in January 1999, and the California Attorney
General's Office joined shortly afterward.

"These are very ubiquitous products that are available everywhere,"
Gottesfeld said. "They're also used by children and infants, who have very
high absorption rates. Adults can also absorb it very easily."
