The 16-acre World Trade Center complex served as a city within a city, with each of the towers housing 25,000 workers at prominent insurance, financial and computer firms, and hosting 150,000 commuters who passed through the train station there each day. On Tuesday, the 1,350-foot-tall towers - 660 million pounds of steel, concrete and glass - were reduced to a smoking pile of rubble. When all of the debris is cleared away - a painstaking, toxic excavation and investigation process expected to take months - architects and engineers say that, amazingly, the foundations should still be viable. But should the icons, which weathered a 1993 terrorist bombing in a basement parking garage, be replaced? "There will be enormous pressure to rebuild on this economic and symbolic hole," said Eric Darton, New York City-based author of "Divided We Stand: A Biography of New York's World Trade Center." "There will be pressure to show the space can be symbolically filled. If there were going to be an attack on the religion of capitalism, this was the single worst blow that could be struck." Experts believe that while the cost of any new structure would far exceed the original, $1 billion price tag, construction would move more quickly this time. It took seven years - from 1966 to 1973 - to build the World Trade Center. "The foundation could withstand the same load, but they wouldn't go for something as big as that, maybe half the size, just to be on the safe side," suggested Dr. Philip Udo-Inyang, associate professor of civil engineering at Temple University. Yesterday, one of the Twin Towers stood a pathetic seven stories high, bent at its girders. The other was a two-story pile of debris and rubble. In the air surrounding the waterfront icons, a pulverized mix of concrete, insulation and paper lingered in a thick, gray-brown cloud of smoke. A sickly smell of natural gas filled the air as generators whirred. Expense account documents, memos and other papers littered the ground, according to one eyewitness. Architectural experts say each towers was hit by an airliner at just the right height for the intense heat of burning jet fuel to fatally weaken the structures. If the planes had struck higher, just the tops of the buildings would have been damaged. Any lower, and the wind-resistant design of the buildings' 18-inch tubular steel support columns might have resisted the planes' impact. "It looked like the plane hit into the window, between the floors, and the building just absorbed the plane like a knife action," said Philadelphia civil engineer Chris Rood. "The combination of where it hit and such a large plane at such a high speed" caused the collapse. * Daily News wire services contributed to this report.
