In fact, Sharon did exactly that. He had rejected President Bush's request, which was followed by a similar request from Secretary of State Collin Powell, to hold the meeting designed to take place between President Arafat and Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres. Sharon's orders to Peres not to meet with Arafat provoked a row because of Sharon's office's denial of such orders. Shimon Peres heard the order on the radio. When he called the director of Sharon's office, the director denied any such statement. Today, Sharon confirmed that he does not want the meeting to take place, because it will harm the national interests of Israel. Shimon Peres requested an urgent meeting with Sharon to discuss the matter. At the entrance of the office of Israel's Prime Minister, Shimon Peres said that the meeting with President Arafat must take place, that it would be constructive and that the Americans want the meeting to take place. The Palestinians declared that they will be present as agreed with the American officials at the designed time and place. But, what did Sharon mean by "the national interests of Israel"? Sharon wants to take advantage of the USA catastrophe and the blood of American victims shed by the sick terrorist attacks in New York and Washington. He is trying to label a whole people, the Palestinians, and nations of 260 million people as terrorists who deserve to be wiped. Sharon, who possesses the same sick terrorist mentality of those who had savagely and outrageously attacked the world trade centre, wants to make use of the time lapse between the catastrophe and the US reprisal to commit mass crimes against the Palestinians. To allow the meeting designed between Arafat and Peres might hamper his mass crime plans. While discussing the encounter (in a loud voice) with Peres, Sharon ordered an unprovoked synchronized vicious attack in the Gaza Strip by air, sea and land. School children, who were just stepping out of their classes got a shock that left them crippled where they were crying in fear. More than 23 missiles until now were launched against the Palestinians, from Apache helicopters, warships and tanks that penetrated deeply into the Gaza Strip from the north, middle and south. Sharon is racing with time to carry his plan to activate the transfer. He wants to create a defacto before the American President and his administration get out of the shock. One tends in view of the ambiguity of the situation and in view of the enthusiastic and feverous attitude of the Israeli government of condemning in a very clear racist attitude all Arabs, all Palestinians and all Moslems, to think that there must be a link between the terrorists who carried the outrageous massacres in New York and Washington and those who committed similar massacres in Beirut in 1982 and in the refugee camps of Sabra and Shatilla. The USA particularly should take into account all possibilities and avoid jumping into hasty conclusions. Palestinians have the right to independence. They do not want Israeli tanks and soldiers occupying their land. If President Bush can say that all Americans are terrorists because of the American who destroyed the FBI building in Oklahoma, then Sharon is right in labelling all the Arabs and Palestinians as terrorists. However, President Bush can condemn a state that supports terrorism, or a state that uses its military institutions to impose torture on another nation by occupying its land and carrying daily torture against it. The Israeli military institution (armed by sophisticated American weaponry) is practicing state organised terrorism against a whole nation- the Palestinians. The United States has the right to do all what is possible to curb down and burry terrorism. Will President Bush apply the same against states who carry organised systematic terrorism against whole nations? There is one state clearly doing so- Israel. ********************************************************************* ******** EVENTS ******** *MILITARY ATTACKS IN KHAN YOUNIS; FOUR CIVILIANS KILLED* Two Palestinian civilians were killed at dawn today, one reportedly clinically dead, during an Israeli military attack from 'Neveh Dkalim' settlement on al-Namsawi quarter west of Khan Younis. President Arafat expressed his regret concerning this kind of escalation, which he said was an implementation of Ariel Sharon's military plan which was declared by Israeli army chief Shaoul Mofaz. ------------------ *SHARON CANCELS ARAFT-PERES MEETING; PERES PRESSES FOR TALKS * Reuters- A senior Israeli political source said on Friday that Prime Minister Ariel Sharon had vetoed weekend truce talks after Tuesday's terror attacks in New York and Washington. Sharon has said Israel will not conduct talks while violence continues. Israeli officials said Peres and Sharon would meet late on Saturday or Sunday to decide whether to hold the meeting. Palestinian officials and Western diplomats said earlier the Peres-Arafat talks would take place late on Sunday in Gaza to focus on breaking a nearly year-long cycle of violence. A political source said Sharon believed now was not the time to launch the negotiations on implementing a cease-fire mediated by Washington in June because "the timing of the talks would hurt Israel." The source was apparently referring to the terror attacks in the United States on Tuesday and Sharon's biting comments the next day when he told Secretary of State Colin Powell in a telephone call that Arafat was like Osama Bin Laden. Palestinians dismiss any comparison between Arafat and the Saudi-born bin Laden, named by Powell as a suspect in the devastating hijack-suicide attacks on New York's World Trade Centre and the Pentagon in Washington. Peres declined on Israeli television to comment on his discussions with Sharon about talks with Arafat. But he suggested failure to maintain a dialogue with Arafat could harm Washington's efforts to rally Arab nations to join an international alliance to fight terrorism. U.N. special envoy Terje Roed-Larsen said Arafat had committed in a late night meeting on Friday to ordering Palestinian security services to ensure that there would be no violations of agreements with Israel. Powell said on Friday he hoped the meeting would take place as an "important way to start the process" but that it was up to Israeli and Palestinian leaders to decide when to meet. The Palestinian Legislative Council held a special meeting on Saturday and expressed "shock and deep sorrow" at the terror attacks in the United States and condemned "all forms of terrorism and state terrorism that harms innocent civilians." It warned of Israeli attempts to exploit the diverted focus of world attention to escalate what it called "its aggression on the Palestinian people." ************ SOLIDARITY ************ - The German community in Ramallah called on the German government to support the Palestinian people and to put an end to criminal Israeli acts practiced against them. ---------------------------------- To sign Al-Awda's petition to terminate US aid to Israel go to: http://al-awda.org/terminate_aid_petition.htm To sign a letter asking Intel Corporation to dis-invest from Israel go to: http://al-awda.org/campaign/intel_letter.htm ================================================================= http://al-awda.org To sign Al-Awda's petition to terminate US aid to Israel go to: http://al-awda.org/terminate_aid_petition.htm To sign a letter asking Intel Corporation to disinvest from Israel go to: http://al-awda.org/campaign/intel_letter.htm ================================================================= Al-Awda, The Palestine Right to Return Coalition is the largest network of grassroots activists dedicated to Palestinian human rights.
