In the text of Linda Moulton Howe's recent report, "Who is Osama bin Laden
and What Does He Want?" there is no mention of the US CIA's role in helping
create the Osama bin Laden we are faced with today. There is no mention of
this in Whitley's most recent journal article either.

This CIA funding, arming and training has not been a secret, so why is it
being overlooked?

Linda's report says:

"During the 1980s, Osama bin Laden was an aggressive fund raiser to provide
the mujahedeen freedom fighters whatever aid and military equipment he could.
By 1988, he established his now-famous organization, Al Qaeda, to provide
more military muscle and financing to the Afghan resistance. "
-----
An aggressive fundraiser? Is that what Saddam Hussein was when we were
funding him in his struggle against Iran? That's certainly funny way of
putting it.

Does anyone see a pattern here? The US builds up vicious leaders who oppose
our "Enemies Du Jour" and these same leaders turn around and become our worst
enemies. We conveniently forget that the US has backed (if not outright
created) some of the most despicable regimes in history.

Blowback chronicles
Giles Foden

"During the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, US officials passed billions in
funding and training to the mojahedin. The CIA, in particular while under the
direction of William Casey - head of the agency during the Reagan
administration - was the main manager of these operations. With the Russian
withdrawal in 1989, the CIA "celebrated its victory with champagne". So says
Unholy Wars: Afghanistan, America and International Terrorism (Pluto Press,
12.99), the definitive account by ABC journalist John Cooley."

and:

Cooley points out that while the State Department released a fact sheet on
bin Laden in 1997 (the year prior to the bombing of the East African
embassies), the document "omits the background facts which help to explain
how early and close were his connections in the United States - making it
easier for the Reagan-Casey jihad team to enlist his talents and his
fortune".

and:

Everyone was getting along famously, according to Cooley. "Delighted by his
impeccable Saudi credentials, the CIA gave Osama free rein in Afghanistan, as
did Pakistan's intelligence generals."

>From an MSNBC article:

"But in 1979, bin Laden left Saudi Arabia to fight in Afghanistan. He fought
on the side of the mujaheddin, which were right-wing Islamic troops who
fought against the Soviet invasion and puppet government.

The mujaheddin was backed by a number of countries, including the United
States. In fact, some experts believe that bin Laden received some training
from the CIA."

"Osama bin Laden, one-time ally of the CIA in the war against the Soviet army
in Afghanistan, is now the primary suspect in the attacks on the World Trade
Center and the Pentagon, the most deadly terrorist assaults in U.S. history."

'CIA worked with Pak to create Taliban'
Sanjay Suri, London
March 06, 2001 11:40 Hrs (IST)

THE CENTRAL Intelligence Agency (CIA) worked in tandem with Pakistan to
create the "monster" that is today Afghanistan's ruling Taliban, a leading US
expert on South Asia said here.

"I warned them that we were creating a monster," Selig Harrison from the
Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars said at the conference here
last week on "Terrorism and Regional Security: Managing the Challenges in
Asia."

Harrison said: "The CIA made a historic mistake in encouraging Islamic groups
from all over the world to come to Afghanistan." The US provided $3 billion
for building up these Islamic groups, and it accepted Pakistan's demand that
they should decide how this money should be spent, Harrison said.

No genuine assessment of the enemy that Osama bin Laden may be today can be
made without taking into consideration the US government's own covert ops'
involvement in his financing, training and arms acquisition. To ingore this
aspect does not help anyone, except maybe the US government, who is
apparently lusting for war. I am disappointed that both Linda and Whitley
have glossed over these facts.

I have a few questions:

1) Is there money to be made in war?

2) Is the arms industry going to donate their profits to charity because this
is such a "moral" cause?

3) Did Ike or did he not warn us about the Military/Industrial complex?
