The Marketing Of Osama bin Laden
The Times Of India
11-14-1

Suddenly, it's become a universal brand name. Chilean businessman Eduardo
Mateluna plans to launch an Osama bin Laden soap and bin Laden
air-fresheners. Chilean online news-site El Mostrador quoted Mateluna as
saying that he had no strong feelings about bin Laden but that it seemed
commercially attractive to register the name as a trademark.

"It's a name that people already know", said Mateluna who had previously
sold a wine called General Pinochet after the Chilean dictator during whose
long reign of terror thousands of youth activists disappeared for ever.
Mateluna says the idea for registering the Osama name came to him after he
saw how quickly bin Laden masks sold for Halloween. Meanwhile, in northern
Mexico, street-sellers are hawking cassettes about the doings of Osama.

Radio Mexicana De Nuevo Laredo anchor Jose Luis Cardenas has been quoted as
saying that the songs about Osama are performed in the style of corridos -
folk songs popular in northern Mexico and which focus largely on current
events. Numero uno on the hit list of corridos about bin Laden is 'The song
of Osama' which recounts the events of September 11. Almost as popular is El
Corrido de Osama, a loose translation of which runs "Across the skies, the
seas and the land/ they are looking for you bin Laden/ the terrorist whom
the CIA trained/ This was the biggest mistake of the American government".

Back in the US, that most-wanted face is being used to launch everything
from rolls of toilet paper and gun-targets to pinatas in the Texas border
town of McAllen. Harry Belafonte's 1960s calypso song 'Banana boat' ("It's
six foot, seven foot, eight foot banana") has been rewritten with the lyrics
now saying "Talibanbanana/ Air Force come and it flatten my home".

Meanwhile, on a Brazilian farm in Itaborai, an American cockerel called
George Bush and his Afghan counterpart Osama bin Laden have become the best
of friends, sharing the same roost and eating from the same plate. "Man is
Nature's sole mistake", said W S Gilbert in Princess Ida. And Sir Jan
Laurens Van der Post observed in The Lost World of the Kalahari that "Human
beings are perhaps never more frightening than when they are convinced
beyond doubt that they are right".
