Doomed plane's number wins lottery
Thousands of people used the flight number of the airliner which
crashed into a New York suburb yesterday to share more than $A1.93
million in the New Jersey Lottery, say officials.
Lottery officials say the winners who bet on the flight number of the
jetliner will receive $A30 wins.
American Airlines Flight 587 plunged into a Queens neighbourhood
yesterday morning.
All 260 people aboard the Airbus A300 died in the air disaster that
shook New Yorkers with fears of a deadly new attack, almost exactly
two months after September 11.
Hours later not only did number 587 turn out to be the winning number
in the lottery but players ended up buying more than 27,800 winning
tickets.
It emerged today that the pilots of the airliner knew they were in
trouble within the first two minutes of takeoff, an initial analysis
of the cockpit voice recorder shows.
Two minutes and two seconds after American Airlines Flight 587 began
rolling down the runway at John F Kennedy international airport
"there are several comments suggesting loss of control of the
aircraft," National Transportation Safety Board official George Black
told a press conference today.
Black said a second "quick look" at data from the voice recorder
recovered from the crash detected "airframe rattling noises" a few
seconds apart.
At 114 seconds "the captain makes a comment about wake encounter" -
referring to turbulence that may be caused by the wake of the last
plane to take off from the same runway.
The NTSB also announced what Marion Blakey, who chairs the agency,
called a "major breakthrough" - the recovery of the flight data
recorder.
This is thought to contain crucial clues to the cause of the crash in
which the final death toll is expected to be 265 - all 260 people
aboard the plane and five on the ground in the Belle Harbour area of
Queens.
Most indications pointed to an accidental cause of the crash as the
grim task of recovering bodies neared a conclusion today.
New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani ruled out the remote possibility that
one or more birds had been sucked into an engine, causing the crash.
