EGYPT CALLS ON U.S. TO STOP ISRAELI ARMS BUILDUP
CAIRO [MENL] -- Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has called on
the United States to stop supplying Israel with weapons. In an
unusual call from Mubarak, the Egyptian president said U.S.
military support of Israel would foment instability the region. He
said this includes Israeli development of nuclear weapons. "Israel is
arming itself and the United States is also providing it with
weapons," Mubarak said on Wednesday in a ceremony to open a
bridge across the Suez Canal. "But how long will Israel's neighbors
continue its silence while this continues?" Mubarak warned of a
Middle East arms race unless the U.S. ends military aid to Israel.
He said such a race could involve weapons of mass destruction

RUSSIA MARKETS SU-30 TO ARAB STATES
ABU DHABI [MENL] -- Russia has been marketing top line aircraft
to Gulf Arab and Middle East states. The Russian effort took place
during the Dubai 2001 air show held last week. Russia had a large
contingent and displayed six aircraft for Gulf and foreign visitors.
The focus of the Russian effort was the SU-30 combat aircraft,
produced by the Sukhoi Design Bureau. Sukhoi Vice President
Alexander Klementiev said the company is negotiating with several
prospective Middle East clients. He refused to elaborate. Russian
industry sources said the combat aircraft has aroused interest in
the region. Nikolai Novichkov, editor-in-chief of the Moscow-based
Itar-Tass news agency, said Russia sees the Persian Gulf as a
major area of growth.

ISRAEL EXPECTS WMD TERROR ATTACK
JERUSALEM [MENL] -- Israel is preparing for a weapons of mass
destruction attack by insurgency groups or their government
sponsors. Israeli officials said authorities have been placed on alert
to counter any WMD attack. They said the government has
imported millions of vaccinations against anthrax. Israeli national
security council adviser Maj. Gen. Uzi Dayan told a Knesset
subcommittee that the nation must brace for a terrorist attack.
Dayan said authorities must assume that terrorists will use any
means at their disposal. Over the weekend, Saudi fugitive Osama
Bin Laden said he was prepared to use weapons of mass
destruction to retaliate against any U.S. attack.

U.S. EASES PRESSURE ON LEBANON, SYRIA
NICOSIA [MENL] -- The United States appears to have shelved
efforts to pressure Lebanon and Syria to act against Hizbullah.
Administration sources said the State Department and the White
House have agreed that significant pressure on Lebanon or Syria
would divert from the military offensive in Afghanistan. The sources
said Arab allies of the United States as well as France and Russia
are opposed to a U.S. campaign against Hizbullah. Last week, the
Beirut government rejected a U.S. demand to freeze assets of
groups deemed as terrorists by Washington. Lebanese government
leaders said they regard Hizbullah and Palestinian insurgency
groups as conducting what they termed a legitimate war of
liberation against Israel. Administration sources said the State
Department had little stomach for a confrontation with Lebanon or
Syria regarding Hizbullah. They said the U.S. appeals to Lebanon
for a crackdown on Hizbullah were meant to assuage the Congress
and Israel.
