Giuliani takes new job with accountants
Ed Vulliamy, New York
Sunday November 18, 2001
The Observer
New York's ebullient outgoing mayor, Rudolph Giuliani, has
secured himself a new job - as an accountancy executive.
The New York Post reported yesterday that the Ernst & Young
corporate accountancy giant has not only cut a deal with Giuliani,
but with at least two of his closest aides at City Hall as well,
making the appointments a massive block transfer of talent from
public service to the private sector.
But his appointment, sources told The Observer yesterday, would
not prevent Giuliani from nurturing further political ambitions within
the Republican Party. Neither the party nor Giuliani himself have
ruled out the possibility that he may stand for the Governorship of
New York State.
Nor will it affect, said a local Republican official, the likelihood that
Giuliani will head a special city-state agency devoted to the
reconstruction and rebuilding of the downtown Manhattan site
which was devastated on 11 September.
Giuliani is irrevocably associated with the city's defiance in the face
of the carnage that day, and his presence in connection to it is
seen as giving both a popular morale boost and being a legitimising
force in the new Mayoral administration of his successor, Mike
Bloomberg.
The aides involved in the package are said to include Giuliani's
chief of staff, Tony Carbonetti, and corporation counsel Michael
Hess.
Sources told the Post that the company had been hoping to
embrace Giuliani and the kudos his name would bring, because of
his undeniable 'management skills'.
Ernst & Young is one of the world's largest accounting firms, and is
expected to pay the mayor 'significantly more' than his current
salary of $190,000 (130,000).
The mayor will leave office on 31 December, after two terms in
office since 1994. During that time he has overseen what is
regarded as the most startling resurrection of the city within living
memory.
The news comes just as Giuliani made a rare apology and
climbdown, saying that he had made 'mistakes' in trying to cut the
numbers of firemen at the Ground Zero site, and vowing to bring
back all those removed from rescue duty two weeks ago.
Giuliani's last days in office have been marked by glory and
controversy. Since 11 September, he has become a symbol of
resilience not only for New York, but for the entire nation.
But he became embroiled in a nasty fracas with the firemen, who
have been elevated to hero status and are still engaged in rescue
work at Ground Zero, after he cut their numbers. He faced angry
demonstrations in which police officers were injured and firemen
arrested.
On Friday, the administration conceded that 75 firefighters and 50
police officers should remain on duty for 24 hours a day to try to
identify and recover human remains from the site.
This is the second high-profile apology Giuliani has felt obliged to
issue recently. The other one was a crushing embarrassment - to
the family and relatives of Patrick Dorismond, an innocent Haitian-
American shot dead by police in midtown Manhattan, whom
Giuliani wrongly said might have been a criminal.
