Meanwhile, the Jordan Valley settlements have decided to offer newcomers free housing in an attempt to reverse the population drain. The free housing will be available in settlements that have suffered particularly heavy population losses, such as Gitit and Yafit. The council is not asking people to move permanently, but is rather hoping to persuade them to come for a period of three to six months. "The purpose of the free housing offer is to encourage the settlers who have stayed behind. It is very depressing to walk down a street at night and see empty houses," Artzielli said. Fifty-three families -- about 8 percent of the valley's Jewish population -- have left the valley settlements since the Intifada began last September [2000], due to both the danger of Palestinian attacks and an economic slump. Four Israelis have been killed by shooting attacks in the Jordan Valley over the last 13 months. Over 950 new immigrants arrived in Israel this week, more than 80% of them from the former Soviet Union and eastern Europe. Several dozen arrived from Ethiopia, as did an average of two families from each of France, Italy, England, Australia, Argentina, Uruguay, the United States, Canada and India. Over 37,700 new immigrants have arrived in Israel since the beginning of the year. ............................ :: IDF EXPRESSES SORROW OVER DEATHS OF BOYS IN GAZA BLAST: The IDF [Israel Defense Force] released a statement Saturday evening which "expressed sorrow over the deaths of five children" killed in the Khan Yunis refugee camp Thursday night, apparently by an IDF ordnance. An IDF spokesman said that the device had been placed in an open location that had been used by Palestinian gunmen to fire on IDF troops and tanks as well as for launching mortars. The statement added that the GOC Southern Command Major General Doron Almog has launched an official military investigation into the explosion. The investigation revealed that the children were killed apparently as a result of "coming into contact with an explosive device placed by IDF troops in a position used [by Palestinians] for firing and terrorist activities." [Editor's note: There will be an international outcry from this incident, to be sure. However, it must be remembered that Israel is at war within its borders, trying to maintain security for its citizens. Unfortunately in war innocent people are sometimes killed. Yet, there didn't seem to be much of an outcry when the US bombed a Red Cross field hospital in Afghanistan a few weeks ago or when US planes destroyed a UN vehicle killing all four occupants of the vehicle.] ............................ :: US ATTORNEY GENERAL ASHCROFT DETAINS JEWS: Controversy surrounds US Attorney General John Ashcroft and the US Justice Department's detention of at least 60 Israeli Jews in the United States as part of America's 11 September terror probe. Some of the Jews have been jailed for up to 60 days on the pretext of minor offenses involving working papers and other violations. None of the detainments have produced a single public charge in connection with 11 September. Federal officials have presented no evidence that the Jews, most of whom worked selling toys and trinkets at kiosks in shopping malls, had anything to do with terrorism, reported the WASHINGTON POST on Friday. In one of the few cases to reach a hearing, a federal administrative law judge in Cleveland rejected any suggestion that the eleven Jews before her had any ties to terrorists. Five young Israelis recently released from two months in US jails described oppressive conditions and rough treatment, saying they "were treated like terrorists" even after it quickly became clear they were not involved in the World Trade Center attack. The Israelis claimed last night they were deliberately kept with Arab and Moslem prisoners, who beat them badly, and that they were deprived of food and basic sleeping and toilet conditions. Their imprisonment was extremely traumatic and has left physical and emotional scars, the JERUSALEM POST reported in Sunday editions. ............................ :: GERMAN ANTI-SEMITISM ON RISE: Anti-Semitic attacks are becoming "virulent" again in Germany. "Right-wing extremism now seems to have taken on a new quality. Things that used to happen only in secret are now happening in open daylight. Publicly, shamelessly, provocatively," said Paul Spiegel, president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany. Spiegel made the remarks Tuesday during an address to the annual conference of Chancellor Gerhard Schroeders Social Democratic Party. "Memorials and Jewish cemeteries are being defaced, incendiary devices hurled at synagogues and foreigners homes, and foreigners are being hunted. These are sadly not isolated cases any more." Meanwhile Egypt, Israel's 'peace' partner, is clamoring to show its anti-Semitism. The Egyptian weekly RUZ AL-YUSUF reports that the government-controlled television there will broadcast a series in honor of Ramadan 'proving' that the Jews 'control' much of the world. The programs will seek to show that the Jews are advancing the agenda of the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion", and claims that the Jews have already achieved the following: Control of the world economy and political power; the breakdown of morality via Jewish drug traffic; the extortion of world leaders. ............................ :: MYTHS AND FACTS: MYTH: "The Temple Mount has always been a Muslim holy place and Judaism has no connection to the site." FACT: In January 2001, Palestinian Authority Mufti Ikrima Sabri told the German publication DIE WELT, "There is not [even] the smallest indication of the existence of a Jewish temple on this place in the past. In the whole city, there is not even a single stone indicating Jewish history." This view is contradicted by a book entitled "A Brief Guide to al-Haram al-Sharif", published by the Supreme Moslem Council in 1930. The Council, the supreme Moslem body in Jerusalem during the British Mandate, said in the guide that the Temple Mount site "is one of the oldest in the world. Its sanctity dates from the earliest times. Its identity with the site of Solomon's Temple is beyond dispute. This, too, is the spot, according to universal belief, on which David built there an altar unto the Lord, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings." In a description of the area of Solomon's Stables, which Islamic Waqf officials converted into a new mosque in 1996, the guide states: "...little is known for certain about the early history of the chamber itself. It dates probably as far back as the construction of Solomon's Temple... According to Josephus, it was in existence and was used as a place of refuge by the Jews at the time of the conquest of Jerusalem by Titus in the year 70 A.D." More authoritatively, the Koran -– the holy book of Islam -– describes Solomon’s construction of the First Temple (34:13) and recounts the destruction of the First and Second Temples (17:7). The Jewish connection to the Temple Mount dates back more than 3,000 years and is rooted in tradition and history. When Abraham bound his son Isaac upon an altar as a sacrifice to God, he did so atop Mount Moriah, today’s Temple Mount. It also is the site of both the First and Second Temples. The First Temple’s Holy of Holies contained the original Ark of the Covenant, and both the First and Second Temples were the centers of Jewish religious and social life until the Second Temple’s destruction by the Romans. After the destruction of the Second Temple, control of Temple Mount passed through several conquering powers. It was during the early period of Muslim control that the gold-topped Dome of the Rock was built on the site of the ancient Temples. The products were discovered while the Committee for the Advancement of Arab-British Understanding (CAABU) was doing research ahead of an EU-Israel Association Council meeting on Tuesday. Goods made in Yesha are safe from European Union tariffs - but only for now. The EU leaders meeting in Brussels Tuesday night called off their intention to impose a new tariff on the import of goods made in Judea, Samaria, and Gaza into Europe. Following an Israeli request, the EU decided that for now it would only warn European importers that a tariff is liable to soon be imposed on goods from Yesha. Belgium is behind the tariff initiative, and Yesha Council head Benny Kashriel says that a large lobby of Christian and other groups is threatening to boycott all Belgian products if in fact the status of Yesha products is downgraded. ............................ :: EDUCATION, PLO-STYLE: A new range of textbooks used in Canadian-funded Palestinian schools has failed to fulfill promises to the international community to modify Palestinian hostility to the Jewish presence in Israel and promote peace in education. According to 58 new textbooks and two teachers' guides for grades 1, 2, 6, 7 and 11 published in the past two years by the Palestinian Authority, Israel does not exist -- nor does the concept of peace, a U.S. study has found. Children are encouraged from the earliest school age to hate Israelis, glorify "martyrs" and seek the "liberation" of all of Palestine, including Israel. The analysis of the textbooks, published this week, was carried out by the New York-based Center for Monitoring Impact of Peace (CMIP), a non-profit organization dedicated to encouraging a climate of tolerance and mutual respect between peoples and nations. Since 1993, Canada has contributed $165-million in direct aid to Palestinian development programs, including education, plus a further $10-million annually to UNRWA. ............................ :: ISRAEL MAY HIRE CARVILLE: A key adviser to Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, his son Omri, held a meeting in New York last week with well-known American political spin doctor, James Carville, to discuss Israel's difficulties with international public relations. Carville also has worked with Ehud Barak. Sources linked with Israeli politicians asserted the meeting revolved around assistance that Carville could offer in improving Israel's public relations in the US. Carville reportedly agreed to participate in an effort to rehabilitate Israel's image but conditioned it on a meeting with Ariel Sharon. The idea came at the initiative of an American Jew who approached Carville to work on the project. Carville said he would be interested but that he wanted to meet first with Sharon before making a commitment. It remains unclear if Carville will meet with PM Sharon when he visits the USA in another two weeks. ............................
