Propaganda and Persuasion in John Steinbeck's The Moon is Down By Rodney P. Rice, USAF Academy John Steinbeck's The Moon is Down was originally produced as a result of his association with several U.S. government and intelligence agencies during World War II. Consequently, the novel reflects a deliberate attempt to systematically shape perceptions, manipulate cognitions, and direct behavior toward the acceptance of democratic ideology. In so doing, the work was unusually successful. During the war, clandestine copies circulated throughout Nazi-occupied Europe, especially Norway, Denmark, Holland, and France. In large part, what helped Steinbeck succeed so well was his command of propaganda technique, an aspect of his artistry that has not been fully explored. Therefore, this study examines how Steinbeck used The Moon is Down as an effective instrument of communication to encourage democratic principles, boost morale, and encourage resistance to Nazi totalitarianism. Using an analytical approach adapted from Jowett and O'Donnell's Propaganda and Persuasion, the study argues that Steinbeck masterfully harnessed ideology and purpose, context, ethos, audience, and special techniques to successfully reassert basic Western values. ----- Aloha, He'Ping, Om, Shalom, Salaam.
