-Caveat Lector-

So the Oddfellows had a group for ladies, and they were all old to me at
the time, for I was not yet 21 years of age when this one woman asked me
to join.

I never liked things like this but I liked here. Was an initiation
with lots of noise, and rituals, but before I got through the chairs I
became ill as I had the flu but anyway could not make it without help.

Now the reason they wanted me - to march in their parade.......in those
days skirts were below the knees, and my usual attire was hat, gloves,
coat, suit appropriate for my job - but when I arrived at this meeting
place they gave me this outfit to wear....Eagle feathers down my back to
my ankles and a little white outfit well above the knees and it was
cold.

I walked 3 miles in high heels not thinking how I must look but I got
more whistles and shoults of Pocahantos than I care to remember.....my
mother saw me and was embarrassed and outraged - of course one would
expect this of a Victorian type mother who thouogh drinking coffee was
sinful.

So when I got down to their meeting place I was bell of ball for they
had lost my clothes. The meeting grounds was a local bar and they kept
playing Red Wing on the Juke box, put on especially for them.

So to me this Oddfellows bunch - then it range a bell, this woman was
retired from the New York Central Railroad and these were all high
paying jobs then - but the Odd Fellows were getting on in age, and so
were the women.

When my clothese were recovered about 5 hours later where everyone was
higher than Mt. Olympia, as I left they played Yellow Bird........

I never went to another meeting, and I say - they were a fun lot and if
they did anything better than drink, I do not know what it was.

I still can hear shouts of Pocahontos and one said hey look at Don
Eagle.....for those feathers real Indian headress occasionally would get
caught in a high heel.

Will say this - when I was young I could get a whistle without reducing
myself to such a state to draw such attention, but maybe this is why
they called them Odd Fellows - or was that Good Fellows.
