:: AND THE KILLING CONTINUES...: On Thursday, armed with an M-16 automatic
rifle, at least one grenade, and possibly a pack of explosives, a Fatah
terrorist burst into a Bat Mitzvah celebration (a Jewish milestone marking
a girl's accepting legal responsibility for her actions), shooting in all
directions. He murdered six people; 30 were wounded by the gunshots and/or
went into shock. When the killer ran out of bullets, he attempted to insert
another magazine into his rifle, but the guests, many of them recent
immigrants from the former Soviet Union, then began throwing chairs and
bottles at the terrorist and forced him out towards the lobby. Police who
arrived within four minutes of the beginning of the attack shot him to
death. Murdered in the attack were Avi Yazadi, 25, of Hadera; Dina Binayav,
48, of Ashkelon; Edward Bakshayav, 48, of Or Akiva; Antoli Bakshayav, 63,
of Or Akiva; Aharon Ben Yisrael-Alis, 32, of Ra'anana; and Boris Melihov,
56, of Sderot. Minutes after news of the fatal attack became known, the
PLO-occupied city of Tul Karem - some 9 miles southeast of Hadera - erupted
in joyous celebration, including gunshots in the air. Arabs in PLO-occupied
Jenin reacted likewise. The Fatah terrorist organization [led by PLO leader
Yasir Arafat] claimed responsibility for the attack.

Arab terrorists shot and killed an Israeli motorist Wednesday morning near
the northern Shomron community of Sa-Nur, between Jenin and Shechem.
Unbeknownst to them, the victim was an Arab with Israeli citizenship -
Dasis Shahada, 30; they had been misled by the yellow Israeli license
plates of his rented car.

Tuesday night, Yoela Chen, 45, and her aunt, 70-year-old Rachel Heini, were
shot while stopped at a gas station in Givat Ze'ev, north of Jerusalem. Two
Arabs approached the vehicle to talk with them - to ensure that they were
Jewish, officials later said - and moments later, the murderers sprayed two
rounds of bullets through the windshield.

Earlier Tuesday afternoon, Avi Boaz, 72, of Ma'aleh Adumim, was cruelly
beaten and then shot to death by Palestinian Authority terrorists near Beit
Lechem. The atrocity began when four Tanzim terrorists abducted Boaz and an
Arab friend at a PA/PLO checkpoint outside the village of Beit Sahour. The
PA/PLO naval police manning the location did nothing to stop the
crime-in-progress. Boaz was driven to Beit Sahour where he was beaten and
abused, shot with dozens of bullets, and left for dead. It was learned that
Israeli officials received at least one report from eyewitnesses who saw
Avi Boaz in life-threatening danger. The IDF [Israel Defense Force]
immediately notified the PA/PLO, but nothing was done to extricate him from
the hands of the terrorists.

On Monday night, Sgt. Elad Abu-Gani, 19, of Tiberias, was killed while
manning an IDF checkpoint near Kedumim in the Shomron. The killers opened
fire at the soldiers at a security checkpoint they had established only a
short while before.

:: VOICE OF PALESTINE HEADQUARTERS DESTROYED: IDF forces destroyed the
Ram'Allah headquarters of the Palestine Broadcasting Corporation Saturday.
Within hours Palestinian broadcasting returned to the air. The Voice of
Palestine operated out of several local radio stations in Ram'Allah while
Palestine Television used alternative facilities in Ram'Allah and in the
Gaza Strip. Israel said its latest strike against the Palestinians was in
response to a deadly attack by terrorists two days earlier. The IDF
destroyed the archives, which were in the building, as well as the studios.
............................

:: DEPUTY CHIEF: WE MAY HAVE TO RE-TAKE SOME AREAS: The IDF's number-two
man, Deputy Chief of Staff Maj.-Gen. Moshe Ya'alon, feels that the army may
well have to return to the areas from which it retreated in the framework
of the Oslo Agreements. Speaking with the journal INTELLIGENCE HERITAGE,
Ya'alon said, "The Palestinians see the conflict as a war whose purpose is
the achievement of a Palestinian state - without guaranteeing us, in
return, an end to the conflict. It is clear to me that if we give in and
they achieve this goal, this will motivate them to continue warring against
us, and will also 'wake up' the Israeli Arabs, as well as other Arab
countries with which we have signed agreements."

:: PLO 'ARREST' NEVER HAPPENED: PLO officials issued statements Sunday
backtracking on their having announced the arrest of two Arabs involved in
the smuggling of weapons on board the Karin-A freighter. Last week, the PLO
said that Adael Mugrabi and Fuad Shubaki were both sitting in PLO jails for
their involvement in the smuggling attempt. After Israel proved that
Mugrabi is not in custody, but rather outside of Israel, they modified
their claim by saying that he was not arrested, and only Shubaki was
incarcerated. Diplomatic sources in Jerusalem claimed that even Shubaki is
not in jail, but rather, "a guest in Arafat's Ram'Allah headquarters."
According to the source, the original PLO announcement was made to placate
US President Bush and Secretary of State Powell who demanded the arrest of
those involved in smuggling the 50 tons of weapons.

Meanwhile, the media is downplaying the whole weapons smuggling event.
Regarding the capture of the Karin-A weapons boat, the NEW YORK TIMES'
James Bennet belittled Israel's claims: "Israel is a nuclear power and has
jet fighters and tanks supplied by the United States. Had the arms shipment
gotten through, Israel would have retained overwhelming firepower."
<http://honestreporting.com/a/r/136.asp>. The WASHINGTON POST's Lee
Hockstader also minimized the Palestinian crime: "...[I]ndividual
Palestinians -- and even some Israelis -- mocked the idea that the
Palestinians committed an offense in trying to amass a more formidable
arsenal." <http://honestreporting.com/a/r/137.asp>. The TIMES' Bennet, in
another article on the Karin-A capture, skeptically qualifies the facts:
"Israel SAID its commandos seized..." (Does Bennet believe that perhaps the
ship fell from the sky?)... "That innocent cargo, Israeli military
officials SAID, had concealed tons of weapons." (Does Bennet entertain that
the enormous pile of weapons lined up in Eilat was just a charade --
trucked in from an Israeli ammo depot?) The TIMES uses the qualifier "said"
20 times in this article. Is the entire incident mere hearsay? See the
article, "Sharon, Showing Seized Arms, Calls Arafat Bitter Enemy" online
at: <http://honestreporting.com/a/r/138.asp>. Bennet also tries to
whitewash the Palestinian smuggling by comparing it to Jewish efforts 60
years ago: "Scoffing at what they see as sanctimony by their leaders, some
Israelis have noted that in their own pre-state period, Jews smuggled
weapons into Palestine in the hope of creating and defending their own
nation." The difference, of course, is that in pre-state Israel, the Jews
were faced with a united, genocidal Arab mobilization to wipe out the new
Jewish State. Today, the Palestinians have signed agreements (at Oslo, Wye
River, and Sharm el-Sheikh) pledging to resolving disputes through
negotiations, and agreeing to specified limits on weapons the PA/PLO is
entitled to have.

Note that weapons smuggling on ships is part of a PA/PLO pattern. On May 7,
2001, CNN reported: <http://honestreporting.com/a/r/140.asp> "The Israel
Defense Forces said Monday they intercepted a boat containing weapons,
including anti-aircraft missiles, off the coast of northern Israel, near
Rosh Hanikra... Israeli ships intercepted the 40-ton San Torini and found
it loaded with arms... Their plan was to put the arms into barrels and put
them into the sea, where they were to be picked up by Palestinians..." TIME
magazine documents more illegal PA/PLO weapons:
<http://honestreporting.com/a/r/139.asp> "From the beginning, Israelis say,
Arafat's people have violated the agreements by sneaking in arms. In 1995
Israel agreed to allow Arafat's men 240 heavy machine guns, in addition to
light personal weapons. Now the Israelis say the Palestinians have hundreds
more than that, many smuggled in on Arafat's own helicopters. Surveillance
drones that Israel uses to keep tabs on Arafat recorded his aides' carrying
heavy machine guns off the choppers 'on dozens of occasions,' according to
a high-ranking Israeli army officer. Israeli security officials say some
holders of VIP cards, issued by the Israelis to top Palestinian officials,
used their ability to travel with few checks across the bridges from Jordan
to smuggle arms, until Israel cracked down during the Intifada. Tunnels dug
50 ft. below the sandy border between the Gaza Strip and Egypt have also
served as conduits for arms. Israeli troops found two such tunnels last
week and destroyed them."

Here are just a few of the so-called commitments outlawing the Palestinian
smuggling of weapons:
- "No manufacture, sale, acquisition, importation or introduction of any
firearms, ammunition, weapons, explosives, gunpowder or related equipment
into the West Bank or Gaza Strip, except for those of the Palestinian
Police." (Gaza-Jericho Agreement
<http://www.israel-mfa.gov.il/mfa/go.asp?MFAH00q20>, Article IX.3; Interim
Agreement, Article XIV)
- "The Palestinian Police will prevent the manufacture of weapons as well
as the transfer of weapons to persons not licensed to possess them."
(Interim Agreement <http://www.israel-mfa.gov.il/mfa/go.asp?MFAH00qa0>,
Annex I, Article XI.2)
- "Ensuring an effective legal framework to criminalize any importation,
manufacturing or unlicensed sale, acquisition or possession of firearms,
ammunition or weapons in areas under Palestinian jurisdiction." (Wye River
Memorandum
<http://www.israel-mfa.gov.il/mfa/go.asp?MFAH07o10>, Article II.A.2a)
- "Continuation of the program for the collection of illegal weapons,
including reports." (Sharm el-Sheikh Memorandum
<http://www.israel-mfa.gov.il/mfa/go.asp?MFAH0fo30>, Article 8.b)

:: SETTLEMENT SITE OF THE WEEK: Otniel
<http://www.internadlan.com/amana/otniel/index.htm>. Otniel is a religious
settlement in the central Har Hebron region of Judea. It is situated on a
ridge of the Hebron Mountains at 950 meters (3,100 feet) above sea level.
The settlement commands a stunning view of the Judean Mountains and enjoys
the crisp, clean mountain air of the region. Otniel was established in
1983. Today the settlement is the largest and most developed settlement in
the Har Hebron Region, comprising over 70 families and 500 residents.

:: GSS: OPEN TEMPLE MOUNT TO JEWS: The General Security Service recommends
that the Temple Mount be re-opened to Jewish worship. Preparations for such
are already underway in Public Security Minister Uzi Landau's office.
ARUTZ-7 broadcaster Adir Zik told his listeners today, "Although he has
come in for some criticism of his handling of Temple Mount matters, it
appears that Landau is to be commended for his efforts on behalf of
allowing Jews to pray there." The holy site has been closed to Jews since
the beginning of the Oslo War, almost a year and a half ago. The GSS
recently became convinced to withdraw its objections to Jewish worship.

:: IDF DEMOLITIONS IN GAZA REVISITED: Ibrahim Barzak of the ASSOCIATED
PRESS received the HonestReporting.com "Lead Screed Award" for his article
on IDF demolitions of some buildings in Gaza, which makes no mention that
the IDF has come under fire from these very same locations.
http://honestreporting.com/a/r/135.asp

Here are some facts about the demolitions in Gaza: Defense Minister
Binyamin Ben-Eliezer said the operation was in response to daily shooting
on IDF positions in the area, and part of the effort to stop arms smuggling
from Egypt via an intricate tunnel system. The demolished homes, he said,
sat atop entrances to the tunnels. IDF officer Yisrael Ziv said that the
buildings were abandoned, and the PA/PLO only brought women and children to
the scene after the buildings were demolished as a propaganda trick.

In a similar operation on January 12, IDF soldiers destroyed a tunnel used
to smuggle weapons into the Gaza Strip. The IDF Spokesman said the tunnel
was operated by families living close to the border and was dug beneath
their properties. Soldiers discovered ladders, ropes, flashlights, shovels,
spades, and an intercom system.

:: IDF TO ALLOCATE FUNDS FOR GAZA FENCES: The IDF is planning to spend NIS
150 million (approximately $35 million) on new fences around Jewish
communities in the northern Gaza Strip and another NIS 100 million
(approximately $25 million) to improve the existing fence around the entire
Gaza Strip, HA'ARETZ reported. [Why is it that the Jewish communities are
fenced in and not the Arabs?--ed] A senior military source said that some
of the money would also go toward improving defense capabilities at army
outposts in the area. The IDF says that the existing fence around Gaza and
the IDF's deployment has proved most effective during the past 15 months of
fighting of preventing terrorist cells from penetrating Israel's borders.
"During the Holocaust, ghettos were small ... Many ghettos were surrounded
by walls or fences in order to help enforce the Jews' isolation and
separation from their neighbors and the outside world." -- from "FAQs about
the Holocaust" question 16: "What conditions prevailed in the ghettos?",

:: SAUDIS TERM JIHAD AS LEGITIMATE SELF-DEFENSE: Saudi Arabia, under
pressure from the United States to cooperate in the war against terrorism,
has defined Islamic holy war against Israel as legitimate self-defense. The
definition was formulated during a Saudi-sponsored seminar on terrorism
attended by Muslim scholars from the kingdom and abroad. The seminar was
held as part of a Saudi campaign to defend the kingdom and other Islamic
states from charges that they have encouraged insurgencies in the West. The
Muslim scholars termed Israeli aggression as the worst form of terrorism
and justified any retaliation against the Jewish state and its people. They
said Israel and Jewish communities abroad were responsible for anti-Islamic
sentiment in the West in the wake of the 11 September suicide attacks in
New York and Washington. "This [attacks by Israel] is the most dangerous
terrorism to world peace and security and its confrontation is a just
self-defense and jihad [holy war] in the way of allah." the seminar,
sponsored by the Islamic Fiqh Academy of the Muslim World League, said in a
statement on Thursday.

:: ON THE NORTHERN FRONT: Hizb'Allah terrorists fired missiles on Israeli
Air Force planes Tuesday, HA'ARETZ reported. Shrapnel fell on the northern
town of Kiryat Shmona, forcing citizens there to take refuge in bomb
shelters. Shards of the anti-aircraft shells landed in two places in the
city, causing minor damage to property but no injuries. Kiryat Shmona has
been the site of frequent Hizb'Allah mortar attacks. IDF officials said
that Hizb'Allah failed to hit any aircraft.

Meanwhile, Lebanon has objected to UN reduction of peacekeepers. In a
letter to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, Lebanon's ambassador, Selim
Tadmoury, said the force was needed to monitor "the serious violations and
provocations in which Israeli engages on a daily basis on land, at sea and
in the air." But Annan is expected to go ahead with a plan outlined last
year and have a report on it before the current mandate of the UN Interim
Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) expires on Jan. 31. UN officials have expressed
frustration that Beirut has not asserted control over southern Lebanon
following Israel's withdrawal in May 2000 and left the region to Hizb'Allah
terrorists. UNIFIL's numbers have been reduced from 5,800 to 3,600 troops
since Israel's withdrawal. The force is expected to drop to some 2,000
soldiers by mid-year.
