-Caveat Lector- The iodine in table salt is NOT radioactive. Radioactive iodine is used to treat thyroid cancer, which is fairly rare. Iodine is necessary for normal thyroid function. Lack of it causes a condition called goiter. Sea salt is an organic alternative to iodized table salt. A diet high in seafood will also do the job. Kosher salt, which all the gourmet cooks on TV use, does NOT contain added iodine.
