Toronto Globe and Mail Now that's service. A prisioner in the medium security Mountain Institution in Agassiz ( British Columbia) has the tattoo of a large swastika on his stomach. He claims to have rennounced...white supremacy and promises to dedicate himself on release to speaking out against racism. So the prison, to improve his prospects, has agreed to pay $6,500 to remove the tattoo. We will leave it to the players to debate whether the prisoner's reformist talk is sincere or just a ruse to manipulate the system. Of more interest is whether, since federal taxpayers will be footing the bill, the government will do what it usually does when spending public money. So the good news is, the prisoner is losing the swastika. The bad news is, Ottawa will insist on a new tattoo in its place, in large type: "This removal has been brought to you by the Government of Canada. Your tax dollars at work."
