"It appears there was a break and enter at the premise and the culprits set a fire on the second floor," said Toronto Police Staff Sergeant Steve French of 14 Division. "As I understand it the fire was started in some pews that were being used to store books." Firefighters were called to the Anshei Minsk Synagogue, on Saint Andrew St. west of Spadina Ave. in Kensington Market, at about 2:15 a.m., after a passerby noticed smoke and flames coming out of the roof. As firefighters battled the blaze they were forced to toss many holy books onto the steps of the building in order to douse the flames. Firefighters estimate the damage at about $100,000 and the fire marshal has been called in to investigate. "It appears the fire smouldered for a while . . . but at this time we don't have any indication of any untoward activities besides the fire," French said. "You can be sure that all angles will be thoroughly investigated." No one was injured in the blaze. Copyright 1996-2002.
