Arab world patience wears thin Syria
Stockholm | Reuters | 25/05/2002
Arab states have stayed calm despite Israeli violence against Palestinians but the
region faces serious trouble unless Israel backs down, Syria's foreign minister
warned yesterday.
Farouq Al Shara also told a Stockholm news conference the U.S. classification of
Syria as a country sponsoring terrorism was a "big lie".
"The Arabs so far have been behaving in a very peaceful way," said Shara, who is on
a tour of the Nordic countries.
"If the Israeli community, the Israeli government do not want peace, then, I'm telling
you, serious developments will take place in our region, major steps to be taken from
the Arab side," he said, without elaborating.
Shara said the Arab world would hold Israel and the United States, which backs
Israel financially and militarily, responsible for any escalation of tension in the
Middle
East.
The Syrian minister dismissed the U.S. State Department's finding, in its latest
annual report, that Syria, which backs the Hezbollah group, is a state sponsor of
terrorism together with Cuba, Libya, Iran, Iraq, North Korea and Sudan.
"Superpowers sometimes lie because they only think of their interest, they create
enemies in order to achieve political objectives, they don't care much about morality,
ethics, principles, they are greedy."
Hezbollah was a resistance group, he said, not a terrorist group like those who
attacked the United States last September.
"Those who attacked New York and Washington, in my view, are not considered as
freedom fighters. So they are terrorists," Shara said.
"But people who are fighting against Israeli occupation cannot be called terrorists
because the battlefield is on occupied territory," he said. "They are defending
themselves... These people are not terrorists, they are freedom fighters."
"This has nothing to do with whether you like it or not, whether I like it or not...
They
are doing their job against the Israeli occupation and as long as there is an
occupation, one has to expect there is resistance," he said, referring to Palestinian
suicide bombers.
In Israel, meanwhile, the left-wing peace coalition Gush Shalom said there is no way
of stopping the attacks in Israel without ending the occupation of the Palestinian
territories.
Speaking out a day after a suicide bomber blew himself up killing two Israelis and
wounding more than 30, the organisation said it was clear that the Israeli army's
huge military action in the West Bank, dubbed Operation Defensive Wall, had not
achieved anything. "It has become clear this operation didn't solve any of the
problems and did not establish any 'defensive wall'," the group said in a statement.
The closure and the siege of Palestinian towns and villages alongside the
"unprecedented killing and destruction" had only served to increase the anger and
frustration and the willingness of Palestinians to carry out attacks.
