Fire crews thinned trees and brush near the Willow Canyon neighborhood and the Mount Lemmon Highway to create a firebreak, said a fire service spokesman, Bob Dyson. The houses, in Willow Canyon, were not in immediate danger, Mr. Dyson said. Fire engines were standing by as a precaution, he said. About 100 people were evacuated on Sunday as high winds hampered firefighting. Some houses had been vacated earlier in the week and others were vacant vacation homes, said Dean Barnella, chief of the Mount Lemmon Fire Department. The fire was 40 percent contained, the authorities said. About 700 firefighters were working the blaze. A firefighter injured this morning by a falling tree was flown to a local hospital, Mr. Dyson said. He was treated and released. Forest Service officials estimate the chances that the cleared area along the highway will stop the fire are about 75 percent. "The road is the only good place to stop the fire," said Heidi Schewel, a Coronado National Forest spokeswoman. Mr. Dyson said, "The next couple of days are going to be very important for this fire." The Pima County Board of Supervisors declared a state of emergency on Sunday, which allows the county to apply for aid from state and federal sources, said Supervisor Ray Carroll, whose district includes the mountain area. The declaration was sent to Gov. Jane Dee Hull, who will submit it to officials of the Federal Emergency Management Agency in Washington. The fire was discovered last week in the Redington Pass area. The authorities said they believed humans caused it. On Sunday, the wildfire and the extremely dry conditions prompted officials to close the 222,000-acre forest district to visitors. In New Mexico, a wildfire burning in the rugged Pecos Wilderness of the Santa Fe National Forest and on private land had scorched 12,000 acres by Monday. Firefighters had contained 35 percent of the blaze and got a break today as humidity rose. http://www.nytimes.com/2002/05/28/national/28FIRE.html?ex=1023585525&ei=1&en=58e2415c63b9d1a2 HOW TO ADVERTISE --------------------------------- For information on advertising in e-mail newsletters or other creative advertising opportunities with The New York Times on the Web, please contact [EMAIL PROTECTED] or visit our online media kit at http://www.nytimes.com/adinfo For general information about NYTimes.com, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Copyright 2002 The New York Times Company www.ctrl.org DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER ========== CTRL is a discussion & informational exchange list.
