1) Senator Boxer: 'Communism Is Dead' in Cuba
California's ultra-left-wing senator, Barbara Boxer, insists that "Communism is dead"
in Castro's Cuba.
Boxer made these comments in late May at a Senate Commerce Committee hearing when Otto
Reich,
the assistant secretary of state for Latin America, testified. Boxer was arguing in
favor of an amendment
to the Trade Bill that would allow private U.S. financing of food sales to Cuba.
Boxer told Reich she is unhappy with the Bush administration's hard-line policy with
Cuba, and that she
holds a different view after a recent trip to the enslaved island nation.
While admitting that Castro had helped to spread communism, she told Reich and her
colleagues: "It's
a new day. Comunnism is dead. It's even dead in Cuba. I hate to say it, it's dead."
Boxer's evidence of this new discovery – which has yet make even the liberal New
York Times?
She explained, "Castro may think he has communism, but he's got a whole dollar economy
going and I
went to the restaurants and there's all kinds of capitalism over there."
Boxer's travels to communist countries during the Cold War must have been limited.
Even in Mother Russia at the height of the Cold War, the dollar was king. The Russian
"communist"
government had restaurants and stores that sold goods to foreigners and citizens for
"hard currency,"
usually dollars.
Why? It was one way the communist state filtered hard currency back into its coffers
to continue to build
its military-police state.
Cuba, of course, continues to follow the same model. And Boxer apparently has taken
time to read the
State Department report, as well as those of the left-leaning Human Rights Watch and
Amnesty
International – all of which report that Castro continues to maintain one of the
most repressive
communist regimes in the world: no human rights, no property rights, no civil rights.
How can she claim a vibrant capitalist economy exists in Cuba?
One person who didn't cotton to Boxer's claims, and others that say Cuba is not a
threat to U.S.
security, was maverick Republican Senator John McCain.
Sen. McCain reminded Boxer that on a recent visit to Tehran, Castro said that Iran and
Cuba together
could "bring America to its knees."
He told Reich that "last year, Jose Delafuente, the former director of research at
Cuba's Center for
Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, wrote that he was profoundly disturbed about
Cuba's sales of
dual-use technology to Iran, a member of the Axis of Evil. It sponsors terrorism."
The remark was a not-so-subtle slap at Jimmy Carter, who during his recent trip
claimed the U.S. had
no evidence Cuba was developing bioweapons or sharing them with rogue states.
2) New York Conservatives Meeting This Week
New York Conservative Party, the one William F. Buckley made a houseold name when he
ran for
mayor of New York in 1965, is meeting this week in Albany, N.Y.
The party is expected to endorse George Pataki as its gubernatorial candidate.
Pataki, a solid Republican, is seeking a third term. Attempting to thwart Pataki is
New York
businessman Thomas Golisano.
Golisano is the founder of Paychex and a mega-multimillionaire. He is also an avid fan
of Andrew
Cuomo, who is running for the Democratic nomination.
Recently, New York's Independent Party, which Golisano helped to found, soundly
rejected giving
Golisano its nod and overwhelmingly endorsed Pataki.
Golisano has been trying to persuade conservatives to give him their nod. But many New
York insiders
see Golisanos effort as nothing more than an effort to help the Democrats take the
New York
governorship.
Having New York state in the hands of the Democrats would give Hillary Clinton
complete control of
New York state, with the ability to raise tens of millions for the Democratic Party
and a presidential run.
3) Thin-Skinned Bill O'Reilly
NewsMax readers have been following the controversy over Bill O'Reilly's new
syndicated radio show.
Though NewsMax has proudly touted O'Reilly, we reported, based on a source we deemed
reliable,
that his initial ratings had not been so good.
The information, we noted, can't be verified yet. The Arbitron reports won't be out
for a few more weeks.
Usually, negative media reports don't awaken giants. But Bill O'Reilly made a heated
call to NewsMax
editor Christopher Ruddy asking for a retraction.
The O'Reilly call was followed by a call from a lawyer representing Westwood One, his
syndicator. (A
lawyer calls?)
We thought that Bill O'Reilly, who is used to being in the arena, would have a thicker
skin.
But one source close to O'Reilly's radio show believes it can be stellar (what show
becomes a sensation
its first month out?) but that Bill needs to be more open to criticism and direction,
which apparently he
isn't.
The source likened any criticism to trying to put "a saddle on a thoroughbred horse."
Thoroughbreds, of
course, don't like saddles. They just like to run.
Another media critic says O'Reilly will never win in the soft-shoe entertainment and
information role that
Rush Limbaugh has perfected.
Instead, the radio expert tells NewsMax, "O'Reilly should play to his strength:
hard-hitting newsman with
top-notch news-breaking interviews, live on radio."
In any event, we'll break out the popcorn and see how the O'Reilly-Rush duel plays
itself out.
But please, if the O'Reilly show goes down the tubes, we don't want to hear from Bill
that it was because
of the "right wing." It was the "right wing" that made up most of O'Reilly's base TV
audience, bought his
books and touted him.
4) Who Was 'Deep Throat'?
The mystery continues to swirl over who the secret White House source was who helped
Woodward
and Bernstein overthrow Richard Nixon.
In their book "All the President's Men," Woodward and Bernstein didn't identify "Deep
Throat" except to
say he was a male, a chain smoker and a scotch drinker who helped guide their
investigative reporting
at the Washington Post.
Woodward and Bernstein have been mum about the identity of the source, and Woodward
said he'll
reveal his name after Deep Throat is dead. Isn't that convenient?
As Woodward discovered from his supposed deathbed interview with the late CIA Director
William J.
Casey, the dead can't dispute a reporter's claims.
No matter that the Casey family said, it was impossible both for Woodward to have
gotten permission to
see Casey and for Casey, who had suffered a stroke, to even talk.
Speculation about Deep Throat is back this month, with liberal Salon.com teaming up
with John Dean.
Dean will reveal in an e-book out in mid-June who he believes Deep Throat was.
So far, as many as 29 people have been identified as Deep Throat, ncluding such top
Nixon
administration figures as Henry Kissinger, Al Haig and Melvin Laird, Nixon's defense
secretary.
But any serious student of the times realizes that such claims are nonsense.
NewsMax editor Chris Ruddy has his own thoughts on the subject. An investigative
reporter, he read
"All the President's Men" and concluded that Deep Throat was fabricated.
In their book, Woodward and Bernstein noted that the Washington Post had a high
standard that any
major allegation needed two sources. But working journalists know that it is almost
impossible to get
two sources. One credible source is usually good enough for most publications.
The Post rule must have driven Woodward and Bernstein crazy until they found, or
should we say
invented, Deep Throat.
In their book they admit that Deep Throat was never a primary source for any story. He
simply was a
secondary source, who corroborated what the first source told them.
Think about it for a second. If Deep Throat was so highly placed and so motivated to
see Nixon fall, how
is it that he could only corroborate other sources for Woodward and Bernstein, but
never provide them
with primary information?
Others have come to the same conclusion. Adrian Havill, who wrote a biography on
Woodward and
Bernstein, said, "... there is no deep throat." The biographer claims it was concocted
to add drama to
their book and story.
As it turns out, in their original book proposal for "All the President's Men," the
authors made no mention
of Deep Throat.
5) China and Russia Quiet About Nuclear War
Both Russia and China have been vocal on the world stage and quick to scold America
anytime it uses
its superpower status. When the U.S. interfered in Kosovo, both China and Russia
warned of a world
war.
But so far, China and Russia have been relatively quiet about the stand-off between
Pakistan and India.
This is even more baffling because Russia has had decades of friendship with India,
and has been a
major arms provider to the country.
China in recent years has been a close ally of Pakistan. Some say China has helped
Pakistan, probably
by illegally transferring U.S. technologies, to build its nuclear weapons as well as
delivery systems like
long-range missiles that can deliver nuclear weapons deep into India's homeland.
With these two countries on the verge of a nuclear war, one top military expert tells
NewsMax that both
China and Russia just may want a nuclear war.
Since the creation of the atomic bomb and its use against Japan, the world has not
witnessed a war in
which nuclear weapons were actually exchanged between combatants, or used against
military targets.
War planners in Russia and China have long held that nuclear war is both practical and
winnable. A
nuclear war on the Indian subcontinent, albeit limited and disastrous for both sides,
would be a case
study for China and Russia on how such a war might unfold.
There is no proof these are Russia's and China's intentions.
But the message to the U.S. from the current showdown is clear: With rogue nations
like Iran fast
developing both nuclear weapons and long-range missiles, the U.S. must speed up its
proposed missile
defense program.
