http://polyconomics.com/showarticle.asp?heading=Memo+on+the+Margin How to Deter Suicide Bombers To: Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon From: Patricia Koyce Wanniski Re: Execute Their Moms and Dads?? As reported June 7th on the front page of The Forward, noted American attorney Nathan Lewin has recently called for the execution of family members of suicide bombers. No kidding: “A prominent Washington community leader is calling for the execution of family members of suicide bombers,” the Jewish weekly reported in its lead news story. Lewin, it said, outlined the argument in the opinion journal Sh’ma. The general idea is that such executions would be a deterrent against further suicide attacks. Lewin posited, “if executing some suicide-bomber families saves the lives of even an equal number of potential civilian victims, the exchange is, I believe, ethically permissible.” In spite of the barbarity of such a position, other American Jewish leaders Abraham Foxman, head of the Anti-Defamation League, and lawyer Alan Dershowitz “argued that his proposal represented a legitimate attempt to forge a policy for stopping terrorism,” according to The Forward. The newspaper noted that Dershowitz suggested the same type of deterrence could be gained by leveling the villages of the suicide bombers! I kid you not. Surely you see, Mr. Prime Minister, how close some prominent some American Jews are coming to embrace ideas at the core of the Third Reich. Yes? How will the obliteration of entire families stop the suicide bombers? If these young men and women are so enraged by the mere razing of neighborhood homes and businesses, how much more anger will be generated by the destruction of whole families, from the elderly grandfather to the child born yesterday? I shudder to think of it. Fighting violence with violence, answering terrorism with military action hasn’t ended the suicide attacks so far. And where does it stop? Brandeis Jewish studies professor Arthur Green wrote in an accompanying article in Sh’ma, “I only wonder how long it will take [Lewin], by the force of this proof-text to go all the way and suggest that the Palestinian nation as a whole has earned the fate of Amalek [a biblical tribe destroyed by Israel],” which Lewin twists into a biblical, “ethically permissible” justification for murder. Lewin provides a compassionate out for himself with this hideous idea by noting that, as Forward correspondent Ami Eden paraphrased it, “family members would be spared if they immediately condemned the bombing and refused financial compensation for the loss of their relative.” But what does condemning the bombing mean? Yasir Arafat has been condemning the suicide bombings all the way down the line but it didn’t stop your government and the Israeli Army from laying siege to his compound. What will be the standard for sparing the lives of the families? What will be enough? It is the ultimate irony that such news ran next to an Albin Family Foundation advertisement which made more sense than anything I’ve read recently. “The 20th Century concept of A SUCCESSFUL WAR is one in which the winners force democracy and prosperity on the losers, and thus eliminate the need for the winners’ children to once again fight the losers’ children. The Israelis have the right to insist that the Palestinians become truly a democratic society. They have that right because only if the Palestinians have such a society is there a long range hope for peace.” The Albin Family Foundation lists several things the government can incorporate as a “Positive-sum agenda,” with unilateral action taken to show the Palestinians and the world that you mean it, Mr. Sharon, when you say Israel is willing to live with a Palestinian state. You must withdraw from Gaza and end the building in the settlements on the West Bank, and treat Arabs with decency, as “fellow human beings,” accorded the same rights and citizenship as any Jewish Israeli. It would be the greatest of legacies for you to leave Israel’s and Palestine’s grandchildren a peaceful coexistence. Please, Mr. Sharon, treat Mr. Lewin’s suggestion with the revulsion it deserves. Do not believe that obliterating entire communities of Palestinians will solve the problem of the suicide bombers. That final “solution” is what has brought us to this point. Now a choice must be made. The only true deterrent to the suicide attacks is a peace proposal that works, one that includes self-determination for and by the Palestinians in the form of a self-sufficient, prosperous Palestinian state. Israel’s and the world’s best hope for security in the Middle East is democracy and prosperity for Israel and all her neighbors. Any other course is the way to the kind of madness that has overtaken Lawyer Lewin – and his friends Dershowitz and Foxman. www.ctrl.org DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER ========== CTRL is a discussion & informational exchange list.
