Files Examined on Yale Site Included Those of Lauren Bush

July 28, 2002
By KAREN W. ARENSON

When one or more people at Princeton University breached a
Yale University admissions office Web site, among the 11
students whose files were scrutinized were Lauren Bush, who
appears to be the niece of President Bush, and Ara
Parseghian, the grandson and namesake of the famed Notre
Dame football coach.

The White House said yesterday that it would not comment on
the news, which was reported in The Washington Post
yesterday. Lauren Bush, a fashion model, is the daughter of
the president's brother Neil. President Bush himself is a
Yale graduate.

Two people familiar with the list of 11 students confirmed
that the two names were on it.

Mr. Parseghian, 18, who plans to enter Princeton in the
fall, said that he had received a letter from Yale on
Friday about the incident, and a Princeton official had
called him yesterday.

"Princeton said how much they regretted the situation," he
said. "And they told me they hoped it didn't diminish my
enthusiasm for attending Princeton."

"I told them their apology was accepted," he added, "and
that I was still very excited about going to Princeton."

Mr. Parseghian said he first learned that his admissions
information had been spied on by Princeton from someone in
computer security at Yale. Mr. Parseghian said the incident
was being "blown out of proportion."

The students' names were contained in a confidential report
that Yale put together after learning that its admissions
Web site had been breached.

Yale had set up the site for two weeks in early April to
allow applicants to learn whether or not they had been
admitted; they could gain access to the site by using their
birth dates and Social Security numbers.
