I'm going to do the second best thing and hunker down in my bunker with my canned goods, bottled water, and weapons of individual destruction. :-P [EMAIL PROTECTED] U.S. Weighs Flight Restrictions Near Sept. 11 Crash Sites August 29, 2002 By CHRISTOPHER MARQUIS WASHINGTON, Aug. 29 - Federal aviation authorities said today that they were planning to restrict air travel on the first anniversary of the terror attacks around New York City, Washington and Somerset, Pennsylvania, where the fourth hijacked airliner crashed on Sept. 11. White House officials cited security concerns for the restrictions, though they asserted that they did not reflect a specific threat. "Currently we have no credible intelligence information that indicates that any of these Sept. 11 commemoration events are being specifically targeted," said Gordon Johndroe, a spokesman for Tom Ridge, the director of homeland security. The plan, which was drawn up by the nation's top security agencies, calls for barring foreign aircraft, private planes and charter aircraft from a 34-mile radius of the crash sites for specific periods on Sept. 11 and Sept. 12. More stringent restrictions would apply to the New York area, the officials said. The Associated Press, citing an administration official it did not identify, reported late this afternoon that the government had decided against the restrictions on foreign airliners because it would probably not withstand a legal challenge. The flight curbs, which would reflect the most sweeping effort to control the skies since the authorities shut down aviation for several days after the Sept. 11 attacks, drew immediate criticism from foreign carriers that fly in and out of Washington and New York - as well as from general aviation groups, which say they are being unfairly singled out. "We don't want a repeat of the post-Sept. 11 situation last year, when smaller aircraft were unfairly singled out for restrictions," Phil Boyer, the president of the general aviation group, the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, said in a statement.
