I thought this might be interesting.

Twister
(it has no URL because this summary was written be me --- a German article is
available at www.heise.de)

Beware the links --- or the police will come to your hourse
Never heard of a guy called Seyfried?
Well, if in Germany, consider yourself lucky...

He is quite sarcastic and he likes to draw.
George Seyfried is not always politically correct.
This does not matter - as long as you do not think of putting
a link to his drawing on your site.

It was early in the morning when "gagavi" (name withheld)
got the phone call by his mom - saying that "the police has
come with a search warrant for your home".
When coming back to his home, the police had already left, taking
his PC with them, but while talking to the police at their station,
he found out that he was accused of using "forbidden symbols" on his homepage.

Well, in Germany it is not allowed to distribute symbols like the swastika for
example (there are excemptions if it is for educational purposes etc)
but what makes this case interesting is:

Gagavi did not use the swastika on his homepage.
Infact he only put a so-called "active link" on his homepage, pointing to
a drawing by George Seyfried, which includes a small swastika.
(You can see the whole drawing on
http://www.zweitausendeins.de/jmp.cfm?dsplnr=2233
....and can decide for yourself if this
makes the impression of a Neonazi-"thing")
The artist, Mr Seyfried, was not addressed by the police, though his
name was printed on the lower right corner of the diagramm.

Even more disturbing is the fact that when police asked for a search warrant,
the judge decided to grant this - though it could have been clear that
"gagavi"
did not use the symbol himself and was - by the look of his homepage - way
beyond of being a Neo-Nazi. So a simple active link on your page pointing
to a drawing with some swastika on it can be enough for a search warrant.

Though "gagavi" got his PC back, he could see that is was searched during his
absence.
So what was said to him by the police officer "let us see if your PC is
running" was nothing
more than a ruse because the PC has being searched already.

- - it is not the idea of the swastika being forbidden
- - it is not the idea of policemen having
just a very broad idea of what the internet or computers etc. are about
(When "gagavi"
opened his own discussion board, he wrote the first comment and signed it
with "admin",
an abbreviation we all know for "administrator". Nevertheless the police
said "well,
we did not know who was behind the pseudonym "admin".)
- - it is not the judge who granted the search warrant without realizing what a
hyperlink is,
who was the creator of the "diagramm with the forbidden symbols"
(though the creator was mentioned, even with a copyright-mark at the right
lower corner of the diagram)
- - it is not the fact that nobody ever talked to "gagavi" about the accusations
but rather
the police fancied to get a search warrant because of two "linked" pieces of
a picture in
the size of a small thumbnail

It is the fact that putting these pieces together will result in a puzzle
called "house search".
Someone said " I know I live in a democracy when there is a knock on the door
at 8 oclock in the
morning and I know it is the postman".
Well, it was no postman this time...and you better check your hyperlinks today
if you live in Germany

Welcome to 2002 - it seems like we are 18 years late, Mr Orwell.
Beware of the black helicopters, and the knocking on your door.
