Well, for gnome I found a (debian/ubuntu) package called
"openbox-gnome-session" which runs the openbox wm with a gnome session.
Similarly there is "openbox-kde-session".

The gnome version is more complicated than I'd like, really, (the kde
version is simpler) but it seems like they could be adapted for ctwm.

For xubuntu (xfce), I found
http://www.haskell.org/haskellwiki/Xmonad/Using_xmonad_in_XFCE for using
the xmonad window manager.
