Another possibility is that you can do mouse button bindings in the
context of the window frame, so just clicking on the border puts you
in resize mode.

Functionality for that sort of thing is floating around my list, ever
since the RANDR multimonitor support made it easy to see what a gross
thing we do with fullscreenzoom. It's not _quite_ as trivial as you'd
think at first (especially if you want toggling it to visually add the
titlebar to the top, vs shifting the whole window down by the TB's
height), but it's probably not too bad, especially if you're willing
to toss "maintains state across restarts" overboard.
