I learned to use "exec startx" instead of just plain "startx", for security reasons. Look at this scenario: you leave your screen for a while and trust the screensaver to require a password. However, an intruder can use Control-Alt-F1, or whatever it is, to swich away from X to your logged in text console, type Control-Z to suspend X, and type away at your shell.
