1. RFC 952 allows hostnames with numbers, it's just that the hostname
can't start with a number.
But see RFC 1123 ( http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc952 ) section 2.1 :

"One aspect of host name syntax is hereby changed: the restriction on
the first character is relaxed to allow either a letter or a digit. Host
software MUST support this more liberal syntax.

3com.com , 256.com etc. seem to exist quite happily
