If libcurl was enhanced to use the MLSD and MLST FTP commands defined in
RFC 3659:

then the parsing of the returned data, including file attributes such as
timestamps and such, would be much easier. Perhaps such MLSD/MLST support
could be the building block for this wildcard matching feature?

There is problem with support for these commands. AFAIK is support so poor now that it could make this feature practically unusable (for unconditional use). Maybe as an alternative in future it could be considered - but LIST parsing (even if it is correct for only most of servers) should be more useable.
