I get occasionally similar (if not exactly the same, can't check right now) messages on one of my -current amd64 systems. It seems to be only with abcde, though - it works first time, the message comes by when I try to rip second cd. My DVD is USB2. When this happens, I can still mount the DVD, or even use cdrecord to write to it.
I *think* it is cd-discid which causes the trouble.
