Using bash under Linux, this will halt the perl script before it gets too big:

  ulimit -v 10000

Using tcsh under Linux, this will work:

  limit vmemoryuse 10000

Neither of the above commands work in OS X 10.2.8. OS X does not allow modifying the virtual memory limit. Do the above commands work under FreeBSD (or other BSD)?
