On a Mac, the config files are in ~/Library/Application Support. As a quick test, I did the following:
cd ~/Library/Application Support mv Firefox z.Firefox.bak open -a Firefox
Now closing an existing window and opening a new window works just fine. Unfortunately, with this setup I don't have any of my customizations, in particular, bookmarks. I'll go through the various files to see what is different. Maybe all I need to do is comment out one setting.
