Use the PrtScr button. Screen shot is copied to the clipboard. You can then paste it into Paint. Alt+PrtScr will copy the currently open window.

However, saving to GIF or JPEG might be a challenge. It works in XP and 2k, but I think that Win98 had a more primative Paint app. You might need a shareware utility like PaintShop pro for that.
