Let me take a stab at this one. When Ubuntu came out last year it
seemed to be all over the press. So after a while I started checking
into it.

I think the big deal has more to do with Debian's problems than with any
Debian based distro's merits.

Ubuntu is Debian with a predictable release cycle. On the site
somewhere it states that they take a snapshot of debian and stable-ize
it. They haven't modified debian so much that nothing works when
installed from a debian repository but the ubuntu universe and core
distro seem to have all the packages I've needed so far that debian has
(and I use a wide range of packages from development to blender 3d
modeling to web tools to desktop apps and games.)

What's wrong with using Debian stable, testing, or unstable you might ask?
WOODY/STABLE - so old that our web applications cannot run on it (NOT
desktop apps--web applications). I can't imagine why many people would
still use woody for any modern programming because it requires so much
backporting it becomes a huge pain to work with.

SARGE/TESTING - has more recent technology in it but is still pretty
outdated. Couple that with the fact that NO security releases are
officially released for testing and this just doesnt cut it in a
business environment. And updating on a regular basis to try to get any
security fixes that might be released is an almost sure way to BREAK
your system.

SID/UNSTABLE - You have to FIX lots of stuff when updating becausse
there are VERY frequent packages uploaded to this distro and often times
things break. PLUS NO security updates are officially released for this
either. So this is true to it's name 'unstable'.
