  This may be of help. The FLCL shows that Compaq Armada 7400 had some
problems with sound cards. You may want to try and probe the /dev that
the second poster used. Evidently this person got sound working.

- Cardbus is detected, but I don't have any cards to test is.
- I'm running FreeBSD 5.4 now, but I can't select it in this form.
- sound: pcm0: <ESS 1879 DSP> at io 0x220 irq 5 drq 1:0 bufsz 4096 kld
snd_ess (1p/1r/0v channels duplex default)
- options SC_NO_SUSPEND_VTYSWITCH is needed for suspend/resume from X.
