JT. Thanks. Yes, the problems are solved the easy way. Find a distribution that have gui configuration tools. Started with WXP and everything worked. Tried knoppix, ubuntu, kinotex and couldn't get sound card, but did get internet access at ACLU cwe lug. Fired Xandros 2,2.5, and 3 as couldn't get a ps2 mouse, and didn't know enough keyboard strokes to operate without a mouse, to try to fix it. Got enough that indicated the internet access and soundcard were not configured. When home, I put on libranet 2.8 and the ps2 mouse configured so I could work with adminmenu to configure sound card with ALSA es18xx driver. Again, my favorite distro is the one I can configure. should have mentioned this yesterday. there is a web site for linux on
laptops.
www.linux-on-laptops.com

IT doesn't have any 7800 laptops but does have some 7700 series. are
they anything alike?

it would benefit the community to write a page describing your problems
and how you solved them (or they aren't solved yet). If you need
somewhere to host it I can give you a page on our server.
