Tim, 1. When you sent up the XP boxes did you put them in the same domain and are the Linux boxes configured in that domain. 2. Did you turn on file and print sharing on the XP boxes and NFS on the Linux boxes. Here is a link that might help:

I It is true for scenario 3 but I don't know about scenario 2 as I haven't had a need to communicate those two systems.
