Tim,
1. When you sent up the XP boxes did you put them in the same domain and are the Linux boxes configured in that domain.
Yes.
2. Did you turn on file and print sharing on the XP boxes and NFS on the Linux boxes.
I turned on file and print sharing in XP but not in NFS. Can I use both
NFS and Samba?
Here is a link that might help:

Thank you

I have two computers connected via router in order to

So your network can look like any of these scenarios:
1) WinXP -- router -- WinXP
2) WinXP -- router -- Ubuntu 5.04
3) Mandrake 10.1 -- router -- WinXP
4) Mandrake 10.1 -- router -- Ubuntu 5.04
Is this correct?
This is correct.
With Samba both machines can communicate in both directions running
Linux.
So scenario 4 works just fine. Is that correct? What about scenario 1?
Scenario 4 works as well as scenario 1.
However, when I try to access files from Windows to
Linux, I can see the folders in My Network Places but
I am denied access, "the network path was not found".
From the Linux end, I can access the Windows machine
without any problems.
Is this true for both cases, i.e. scenarios 2 and 3? What do you use
to manage samba shares on Linux: webmin, swat, kde, vi, other? I
It is true for scenario 3 but I don't know about scenario 2 as I haven't
had a need to communicate those two systems. I'm not sure what I'm
using, I installed samba from the package manager on each system and the
only way I've found to use it is to use the run command and type in the
ip address of the other machine.
On another less pressing issue, I can't share the
printer (USB) in any configuration.
This is my first attempt at networking anything so any
and all help would be greatly appreciated.
How is the printer connected to the network? Via a machine, on the
router, or something else?
The printer is connected to the network via one of the machines.
Thanks for your response, I really appreciate the help that I receive here.
