Oddly enough Robert, since Firefox is my browser of chose.
I brought up an application called Ad Aware when I allowed
the application to upgrade itself it executed Firefox and the
application was able to take me to it's home page.
Now Firefox won't work under the conditions I mentioned; but
an application can call on it and work just fine.
It sounds as though something in your default profile got fouled up
(just a guess.) To test that guess, quit firefox completely (i.e.
File > Exit), create a new profile using the profile manager, and
then start firefox with that new profile. For instructions on how to
do so:

You can have more than one profile, so it is not necessary to delete
your old profile before creating a new one.
Try that out and let us know how things go.
