Well, the Mac is off to the repair shop. So, for that past two days my desktop machine has been Knoppix 4.0.2 using a persistent disk image. At work I plug in the FireWire drive, insert the Knoppix CD, and boot. When I go home, I take the drive and CD with me and repeat the process at home. It's been working pretty nicely. There are a few quirks with Thunderbird and KDE, but mostly it works just fine.
