mbox if a single file with messages separated by an empty line with
each message starting with ``From ''. The maildir format is
championed by djb an is a directory with three subdirectories and each
message is a single file in one of the three subdirectories depending
on its status. mbx, championed by UWash, is a single file that is
indexed (faster) and allows concurrent access but is not safe over
NFS.

The mailutil utility distributed with pine can convert mbox to mbx.
