Here's a review about Windows Vista, "Ten Reasons to Buy Windows Vista":
http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ttpcworld/20060210/ tc_techtues_pcworld/124642&cid=1740&ncid=1729 Here's my comments on the ten when compared to Linux: 1) Security. Linux already has that. Although I'm not so sure about the full-disk encryption. Anyone know? 2) IE7. Linux has Firefox. I like the way the reviewer characterized IE7 as "a much-needed, Firefox-inspired makeover" 3) Righteous eye candy. Personally, so what? But maybe that's important to some. Anyone know if any of the Linux desktops compare? 4) Desktop search. Beagle? Anything else? 5) Better updates. Apt-get update/upgrade, synaptic, kpackage, other? 6) More media. I'm not that familiar with this area. Anyone know? 7) Parental controls. Anyone know? Webmin comes to mind for configuring access control: who can login from where when. Webmin also comes to mind for configuring a firewall with a blacklist/ whitelist. 8) Better backups. Anyone know? Sure dd, tar, amanda, etc. but those aren't really consumer-oriented. 9) Peer-to-peer collaboration. Anyone know? 10) Quick setup. FAI? Kickstart? Some things to think about. Any BSD'ers care to comment? <jab> In a few more years, Windows Vista will be almost like OS X is now. </jab> Regards, - Robert http://www.cwelug.org/downloads Help others get OpenSource software.
