My experience with USB wireless adapters can be summed up as such: bad  
reception. Whether this is because the devices can't pull enough juice  
or they have keychain-sized antennae, I don't know the cause.

There are plenty of PCI wireless NICs to be had for $20 on amazon. I  
would bet $17 this is a Realtek card:

which is fine for home use.
