Local machines, mostly. Although it would be nice if remote client machines that are on our VPN could also connect to the servers. > If you have a LAN setup where you want to run some apps from a beefy > server on a 100 or 1000 Mbit network, then raw X11 is fine. If so, what was your setup? I used FreeNX about a year ago under Knoppix. It took a bit of fiddling to get to work and was a bit quirky, but it did work using Linux clients. However, it did not work using the Mac or Windows clients. > If you want to deliver a self-contained desktop environment remotely, > then VNC would work fine- delivering one app (rootless X) would be > best done with X. > > Perhaps if you share your proposed setup, more people can offer > suggestions. In any case, for the X configuration, Ubuntu offers the > GDM login configuration under Administration. The server would be running Ubuntu and the clients would be running Windows, Mac, or Linux. The setup I would like is something most like Remote Desktop for Windows. Requirements: - the server provides a full, self-contained desktop environment - users must log in with the client app to use their remote desktop - the server can support multiple users each with their own remote desktop - applications continue to run even when a client disconnects from the server - flexible enough to adjust for connection type, e.g. LAN vs VPN over broadband or over dialup. In the past, I have used VNC. But I've found it to be somewhat kludgy. For example, it requires you to know/remember the port number for your desktop. I'm thinking that, at least for LAN use, XDMCP is probably closest to what I'm looking for. BTW, a bit of googling found this: http://xrdp.sourceforge.net/ Regards, - Robert _______________________________________________ CWE-LUG mailing list [email protected] http://www.cwelug.org/ http://www.cwelug.org/archives/ http://www.cwelug.org/mailinglist/
