A friend is having terrible problems with an e-Machines computer that
came with Windows Xp. We can get dial out to work but the IE browser
will connect to no sites. I think tis is due to NetZero using a proxy.
I am not sure though, as I can ping www.google.com. Furthermore, I
can't get the sound to work in Xp.

I would like to install Ubuntu/Kubuntu. The only sticking point is
that Ubuntu issues lots of updates and this person uses a modem. Doing
massive updates over 56k is not an option. My question: Is there a way
to limit updates to only essential ones? Also does anyone know if
Kubuntu or Xubuntu issue fewer updates?

My other option is to install OpenBSD 4.0 and run TextMaker and
PlanMaker in Linux compat mode. The OpenBSD project issues far fewer
updates.
