The modem itself might be a sticking point. I have installed and
configured Ubuntu for four different modem users ... with only a 25%
success rate at getting the modems working under Ubuntu (although when I
put Debian on the machine the modem worked just fine). First thing
would be to identify the modem chipset, and make sure it is
Linux-supported. At ByteWorks, we have had good luck with 3Com, LT,
PC-TEL, and some Conexants (using commercial Linuxant drivers).
