Robert I have used gocr and Clara. Both of these are 6.06 Dapper Drake. They are difficult to use and work on only limited types of fonts. If memory serves me right, you had to "teach" gocr what charcters to recognize. This is not a fun task, at all. gocr would be worh the effort, I suppose, if you were going to scan off an entire book but it is not worth it for documents that are only a couple of pages. What you can do is open the scanned *.pnm image in GIMP, convert it to the native *.xcf format, then save the *.xcg as a *.ps and finally use ps2pdf (ps2pdf13) to convert it to pdf.
