I have not seen a problem with USB external storage in quite some time. I
would think just about any would do very well, especially on KC5. It will
show up as a /dev/sdX device (X being the number it assigns, 1 for the first
drive, etc). The question becomes do you want to use that same drive on
other machines, like those not running *nix, and if so, you will need to
format it using a filesystem like VFAT, so its sort of *universal*. If you
are not worried about cross platform compatibility, format it as ext1,2,or
3, or whatever flavor you like under Linux.
