Thanks to everyone that responded to my question. So, in order to get my Linux machine (no Windows partition) to recognize the new USB hard drive I would type in a Terminal:
(as root) mkdir /mnt/ext1 mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/ext1 Does this look correct?
