What I'm finding is that it's easier to have each component on a
different line and each section in a different file in
/etc/apt/sources.list.d. For example:
# tail -n +1 /etc/apt/sources.list.d/{dapper.list,dapper.security.list}
==> /etc/apt/sources.list.d/dapper.list <==
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper main
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper restricted
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper universe
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper multiverse
deb-src http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper main
deb-src http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper restricted
==> /etc/apt/sources.list.d/dapper.security.list <==
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-security main
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-security restricted
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-security universe
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-security multiverse
# deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-security main
# deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-security restricted
# deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-security universe
# deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-security multiverse
If I want to disable a given component, I comment the line. If I want
to disable an entire section (e.g. security), I rename the file so that
it does not end in ".list" (e.g. dapper.security.list.bak).
I'm still experimenting, but so far it seems to work well and nothing
has bitten me, yet. Of course, I have backups of my original
sources.list file, too. Just in case.
