Wikipedia has a good writeup on the different 802.11x technologies: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/802.11a 802.11a operates in a different frequency range than b, g, or possibly n. Most PCMCIA cards you find today will support "a"+"bg", even "pre-n", and sometimes "MIMO". Where are you finding cards that only support "a"? All the Atheros cards I have support "a" and "bg".
